King's Mountain National and State Parks
Kings Mountain National Military Park is the site of a revolutionary war battle where the American Patriots turned the tide against the Tories. A short paved path through the battlefield takes the visitors through a nicely wooded area with various stops along the way explaining the history of the park.
This Memorial Day weekend reenactors were on site offering demonstrations. Beside King's Mountain National Park, lies King's Mountain State Park. The state park has a nice little campground, hiking and horseback riding trails and a couple of small lakes.

Jack of the Wood
There's nothing better than drinking a local microbrew in a mountain town pub (except perhaps, drinking one on top of a mountain after a good hike). Jack of the Wood is a great little pub in downtown Asheville with a small but good beer selection, including many of their own handcrafted Green Man Ales. They also have good live music ranging from folk to celtic to bluegrass. My wife and I actually designed our wedding rings while sitting in this pub.
The pub has outdoor seating on the front sidewalk which allowed us to capture this shot of a car that represents the culture of Asheville better than just about anything else. (Click on image to see larger view.)

Wildcat Falls
Wildcat Falls is located just Geer Highway in Cleveland, SC. Look for a peanut vendor parked on the right at the trail head. Getting to the falls requires a short easy hike (less than a half mile). You can then climb up the side to the top (if you're careful).

Dreher Island State Park
Dreher Island State Park is located in the middle of Lake Murray. It offers camping sites and villas, all located on the lake. 
I was there for only an hour or so this afternoon and saw three deer and numerous species of birds, including these five turkey vultures perched in a tree above me.Location: 34° 5'7.63"N 81°24'21.96"W

Charles Towne Landing
Charles Town Landing is a great way to spend a couple of hours. The park is located on the original Charles Towne settlement site.
A paved walking path will take you past indian burial grounds, a reproduction of a 17th century trading ship, an experimental garden and through a zoo featuring animals indigenous to 17th century South Carolina.
On-going archelogical digs are located throughout the property.
Otters, bison, black bears, pumas, turkeys and several other animals are located in the animal park.

U.S. National Whitewater Center
The new National Whitewater Center located in Charlotte, NC is an artificial river with class 1-5 rapids used for training kayakers and rafters. According to the current issue of Backpacker Magazine, kayakers are coming from all over the world to train here. 
The park also contains 11 miles of hiking/mountain biking trails and a five story rock climbing wall.

The River House Bed and Breakfast
The River House is a fantastic place located on the New River. It’s an old farmhouse turned B & B.
The chicken house, the carriage house, the weigh station, etc., have all been turned into rooms. Although the outside of the buildings look like the original farm structures, inside has been completely refurbished complete with indoor whirlpools and fireplaces.
The inn not only offers a fantastic breakfast but a great dinner menu as well. They also offer a great Thanksgiving Day meal. The River House is owned by a woman named Gail who is not only a gracious host but was also the first female producer on Broadway.
The local fly-fishing club stocks the river and only members of the club and guests of the inn may fish there. The inn has a full bar available throughout the day and the inn is host to an annual winefest.
